For fun snowshoeing and cross country skiing, traverse the Wallkill Vally Rail Trail.  This 12.2 mile trail follows the former path of the Wallkill Valley Railroad, which closed in 1977.  Pass through open fields, woods, farms, on the journey between New Paltz and Gardiner. It’s a great place for bird watching, as well as for watching other wild life.  You’ll also encounter gorgeous views of Shawangunk Ridge and the Wallkill River.
