For the outdoor enthusiast there is no shortage of things to do and see in and around Lake Placid.  Being surrounded by the Adirondack State Park, there is a plethora of gorgeous places to visit, including Ausable Chasm, High Falls Gorge, and many surrounding lakes.

The village of Lake Placid actually sits on Mirror Lake, which offers gorgeous views for kayakers or those who choose to take the leisurely 2.7 mile walk around the lake.  There are also over a dozen golf courses in the area, some of which have been there for over a century.  The area also boasts terrific cycling, hiking, rock climbing, camping, and much more.

Because of the surrounding mountains, Lake Placid offers fantastic hiking.  It’s “46 High Peaks” are often a goal for hikers, though some require great technical skill to reach the top, and many do not have marked paths. These trips are definitely for more experienced hikers only.  You may want to check out a guide to the peaks before deciding if that’s for you.

For those looking for more family friendly activities, a visit to the Olympic Center may be in order.  You can visit the famous Miracle on Ice arena and learn about what is considered one of the greatest moments in sports history.  See lots of great memorabilia in the museum, and learn some interesting facts about the history of the Olympic Games.

You’re able to tour many of the Olympic facilities, which are still in use, no matter which season, and when you reach the Sports Complex you can take a ride on the bobsled track, even during summer!  If you plan to visit several Olympic sites you may be interested in purchasing an Olympic Sites Passport.

If you’re not into hiking but still want to see those spectacular mountain top views, take a drive up Whiteface Mountain Veteran’s Memorial Highway, where after a short drive, you can ride an elevator to the top of the mountain.  For truly breathtaking views, however, you can’t beat one of our scenic flights.  On one of these twenty minute flights you’ll see the beauty of the Adirondacks from above as you soar over the peaks and lakes.  It’s fun the whole family can enjoy!
