800px-Little_whiteface_viewIf you’re visiting Lake Placid, Whiteface Mountain Ski Resort is one of the most fun places you can go. It has played host to two Winter Olympic games, and offers world class skiing, as well as tons of other entertaining activities.

Whiteface has the highest vertical drop in the east, and as you reach the summit you’ll find yourself surrounded by the dozens of peaks that make up this region of the Adirondacks.   The resort features 87 trails, several of which have seen Americans win Olympic Gold at the 1980 Winter Olympics.  Lake Placid has also sent plenty of Olympians to compete in winter games, and many of them have trained on Whiteface!

Whiteface may have helped train many Olympians, but don’t let that scare you away! You don’t have to be an Olympic caliber athlete to ski these trails.  While there are many trails marked “expert” there are also plenty that are suitable for intermediate and beginning skiers. The mountain is very large, and has 11 different chairlifts.  It’s commonly not very crowded, and staff are very friendly and helpful.

Though Whiteface’s claim to fame is its great ski trials, it has much more to offer.  There is plenty to do all year round. In summer the same slopes that offer fantastic skiing also offer great hiking and mountain biking.  Taking a ride up the Gondola to the summit is something that can be enjoyed at any time of year.  The tree covered peaks, clear skies, and glistening lakes make for a picturesque view in any season.
